What should I do after my LLC is approved?

Last updated September 27, 2026

Your LLC is approved. Here is what to handle next so you can use it correctly and avoid missing basic setup steps.

Once your LLC is approved, you are not done, but you also do not need to panic. The next job is to make the LLC usable: save your approval documents, set up your internal records, get your EIN if needed, open the right banking setup, check licenses and tax permits, and start keeping clean books. The exact order depends on your state and business type, but most founders should focus on separating the business, staying compliant, and making sure they are legally allowed to sell before taking customers.

Steps

  1. Save your state approval documents. Download your articles of organization, certificate, or approval notice. Keep them in a permanent business folder.

  2. Create or sign your operating agreement. Even if you are the only owner, this helps show how the LLC is owned and managed.

  3. Get an EIN if you need one. Many LLCs use an EIN to open a bank account, hire, file certain taxes, or avoid using a Social Security number on business forms.

  4. Open a business bank account. Use the LLC’s legal name and keep business income and expenses separate from personal spending.

  5. Check licenses and permits before selling. Some businesses need local, state, professional, health, home-based, contractor, or sales tax permits before they operate.

  6. Set up bookkeeping. Start tracking income, expenses, owner contributions, owner draws, receipts, and tax reserves right away.

  7. Review insurance. You may need coverage before your first client, delivery, event, lease, or contract, especially if there is physical risk, advice risk, or customer property involved.

  8. Add compliance reminders. Your LLC may have annual reports, state filings, registered agent updates, tax filings, or local renewals. Put reminders somewhere you will see them.
