What ongoing costs should I expect after forming an LLC?
Last updated August 21, 2026
LLC costs do not stop at the filing fee. Learn which ongoing costs to check so you are not surprised later.
The state filing fee is only the first cost. After you form an LLC, you may have ongoing state reports, franchise or entity taxes, registered agent costs, business license renewals, publication requirements in some places, bookkeeping, tax preparation, insurance, and separate city or county fees. Not every business pays every cost. The right list depends on your state, industry, location, and whether you hire employees, collect sales tax, or use a paid registered agent. The goal is not to memorize every possible fee. It is to build a small compliance calendar so nothing surprises you later.
Steps
-
Check your state’s LLC renewal rules. Many states require some kind of recurring report, statement, or renewal. The name and timing vary by state.
-
Look for state-level business taxes. Some states charge franchise, entity, or similar taxes. These are separate from federal income tax and may apply even if your business is small.
-
Confirm your registered agent setup. If you use a paid registered agent, check whether it renews each year. If you act as your own agent, make sure your address and availability still meet the state rules.
-
Review local license renewals. Your city or county business license may renew separately from your LLC. Industry permits may have their own renewal rules too.
-
Plan for tax and bookkeeping help. Even if you file taxes yourself, you may need bookkeeping software, a separate bank account, sales tax tracking, payroll support, or a CPA as the business grows.
-
Add insurance if your risk calls for it. General liability, professional liability, workers’ compensation, or commercial auto may matter depending on what you do and where you operate.
-
Create one calendar. Put state filings, local renewals, tax deadlines, insurance renewals, and registered agent renewals in one place.
