Should I build my website before or after forming my LLC?
Last updated September 27, 2026
You can plan your website early, but wait to collect payments until your business name, bank, licenses, and tax setup are ready.
You can start planning your website before you form your LLC, but be careful about launching in a way that creates legal, tax, or licensing problems. It is usually fine to draft pages, test your offer, reserve a domain, and build a waitlist early. If you are going to take payments, sign contracts, collect sales tax, use a formal business name, or need a license, it is usually better to finish the key setup steps first. Your website should match the business you are actually allowed and ready to operate.
Steps
-
Reserve the basics early.
You can usually choose a domain, create draft branding, outline your services, and write website copy before forming an LLC. -
Check name availability before you commit.
A domain name does not mean the business name is available in your state. Check your state business name rules before printing materials or building a brand around the name. -
Decide whether you are selling yet or just preparing.
A simple “coming soon” page or interest form is different from taking orders, signing clients, or collecting deposits. -
Form the LLC before using the LLC name publicly.
If you plan to operate as an LLC, wait until it is approved before presenting the business as an LLC. -
Set up the money path before payments.
Get the EIN if needed, open the business bank account, and connect your payment processor to the business account. -
Check licenses before launch.
Some businesses need approval before advertising, booking clients, serving food, offering professional services, or operating from a location. -
Add tax and policy basics.
Make sure your checkout, invoices, sales tax settings, refund policy, and contact information fit your business.
