I got an EIN. What tax accounts do I need to set up next?
Last updated September 27, 2026
An EIN is not the same as being registered for every tax. Learn what to check next for sales tax, payroll, and state accounts.
An EIN is just your federal business tax ID. It does not automatically register you for state taxes, sales tax, payroll taxes, local business taxes, or industry-specific taxes. After you get an EIN, your next tax steps depend on what you sell, where you sell, whether you have employees, and how your business is structured. The goal is not to register for everything. The goal is to register only for the taxes that actually apply to your business.
Steps
-
Save your EIN confirmation.
Keep a copy with your business records. You may need it for your bank account, payment processor, state registrations, payroll setup, and tax filings. -
Check if you need a state tax account.
Many states require a separate registration for state income tax, franchise tax, gross receipts tax, or other business-level taxes. This depends on your state and entity type. -
Check sales tax before you collect it.
If you sell taxable products or taxable services, you may need a sales tax permit before collecting sales tax from customers. Do not collect sales tax until you know whether you are registered correctly. -
Check payroll tax before hiring or paying wages.
If you hire employees, you may need state withholding, unemployment insurance, and payroll accounts. Contractors are different, but you still need good records. -
Look for local tax registrations.
Some cities or counties have business taxes, local licenses, or annual renewals. These are separate from your EIN. -
Check for industry taxes.
Businesses in areas like alcohol, tobacco, fuel, lodging, food service, transportation, or regulated products may have extra tax accounts or reporting rules. -
Track due dates once you register.
Tax accounts often come with filing requirements, even during slow periods. Save every login, confirmation, and filing notice.
