How do I know which startup checklist applies to my business?

Last updated August 24, 2026

Learn why startup checklists differ and how to follow the right one for your state, business type, and timeline.

The right checklist depends on four things: where you operate, what you sell, how you sell it, and whether anyone works for the business. That is why online checklists disagree. A home-based designer, a food truck, an online seller, a contractor, and a coaching business may all need different licenses, tax accounts, insurance, and setup steps. You do not need the longest checklist. You need the checklist that matches your actual business right now, then updates as your business changes.

Steps

  1. Start with your location
Use the state where you actually run the business, not just where you saw someone recommend forming an LLC. City and county rules can matter too.

  2. Define what you sell
Products, services, digital goods, food, alcohol, health services, childcare, construction, transportation, and professional services can trigger different requirements.

  3. Define how you sell
Online, in person, at events, from home, from a storefront, across state lines, or through a marketplace can change your license and tax steps.

  4. Separate universal steps from conditional steps
Many businesses need records, tax planning, bookkeeping, and a way to get paid. Not every business needs sales tax registration, payroll accounts, a professional license, or commercial insurance on day one.

  5. Follow the next required step, not every possible step
If you are pre-revenue, your roadmap may look different from someone hiring employees or opening a physical location.

  6. Re-check when something changes
Update your checklist when you add a new state, hire help, change products, open a location, or start collecting sales tax.

If you are still stuck

Use the Stratify roadmap instead of a generic checklist. It is designed to narrow the steps by your state, business type, timeline, and budget. If something still feels unclear, ask the AI coach what applies to your exact situation.
