Do I need a CPA before I have revenue?

Last updated September 27, 2026

Learn when you can wait on hiring a CPA, when you should get help early, and what to set up before revenue starts.

Usually, you do not need a CPA before you have revenue. If your business is simple, you can often start by keeping clean records, separating business activity from personal spending, and learning what taxes may apply. A CPA becomes more useful when money starts moving, your tax situation gets more complicated, or you need advice that is specific to your state, entity type, or personal income. The goal is not to hire every professional on day one. The goal is to avoid messy records and missed obligations.

Steps

  1. Start with your business structure. Know whether you are operating as a sole proprietor, single-member LLC, partnership, corporation, or something else. Your tax filings depend on this.

  2. Separate your records early. Use a dedicated business bank account when you can. If you are not there yet, keep a clear list of business income and expenses so you can separate them later.

  3. Track every dollar in and out. Save receipts, invoices, payment processor reports, mileage notes, subscriptions, and equipment purchases. Clean records make tax help cheaper and easier later.

  4. Set aside money for taxes once you earn income. Many founders set aside a percentage from each sale because income tax and self-employment tax can both apply. The right amount depends on your profit, location, and other income.

  5. Consider a CPA sooner if anything is complicated. Get help early if you have employees, partners, inventory, multi-state sales, large equipment purchases, outside investment, or you are unsure whether you should make estimated tax payments.

  6. Do not wait until tax season if you are confused. A short planning conversation during the year can be more useful than trying to fix everything after the year ends.
