Can I use my personal bank account at first, or do I need a business bank account before I get paid?

Last updated September 27, 2026

When to open a business bank account, when a personal account is risky, and what to do if you already got paid.

If you are a sole proprietor, you can usually get paid into a personal account at the very beginning, but it gets messy fast. If you formed an LLC, you should open a business bank account before taking payments whenever possible. Keeping business money separate helps protect your LLC’s separation, makes bookkeeping easier, and makes tax time less stressful. You do not need a perfect finance setup to start, but you do need a clear line between personal and business money as soon as you can.

Steps

  1. Check your business structure.
If you are operating as a sole proprietor, a separate account is still a good idea, but it is not the same legal issue as it is for an LLC. If you have an LLC, treat the business as separate from you.

  2. Get your EIN if your bank asks for it.
Many business bank accounts ask for an EIN, your approved LLC paperwork, and basic owner information. Some sole proprietors can use a Social Security number, but an EIN can still help keep things cleaner.

  3. Open the business account before connecting payment tools.
Use the business account for Stripe, PayPal, invoices, marketplaces, checks, and customer deposits.

  4. Do not mix spending.
Pay business expenses from the business account. Do not use it for groceries, rent, or personal bills.

  5. If you already got paid personally, document it.
Record the payment, what it was for, the date, and whether you transferred it into the business account. Do not panic. Just clean it up and keep notes.

  6. Start simple bookkeeping.
Track income, expenses, owner transfers, and taxes from the start. A spreadsheet is better than guessing later.
