Can I be my own registered agent?
Last updated August 19, 2026
Learn when you can act as your own registered agent, when a service helps, and what to consider before choosing.
Yes, you can usually be your own registered agent if you have a physical street address in the state where your LLC or corporation is registered and you are reliably available during normal business hours. A registered agent’s job is simple but important: receive official state mail and legal notices for the business. You do not have to hire a service just because a website offers one. But a service can be useful if you work from home and want more privacy, travel often, keep irregular hours, or formed in a state where you do not have a local address.
Steps
-
Check your state’s rule.
Most states require every LLC or corporation to list a registered agent. The agent must typically have a real street address in that state, not just a P.O. box. -
Decide if your address is okay to list.
Registered agent information may appear in state records. If you do not want your home address connected to the business, a registered agent service may be worth considering. -
Think about availability.
The agent should be able to receive official mail during business hours. If you travel, work on job sites, or are hard to reach, being your own agent can create risk. -
If you formed outside your home state, be careful.
You usually need an agent in the formation state. If you also register to do business in your home state, you may need one there too. -
Do not confuse this with business mail.
A registered agent is not the same as a mailing address, virtual office, or customer-facing business address. -
Put renewal reminders on your roadmap.
If you use a service, it commonly renews each year. If you act as your own agent, you still need to keep the address current with the state.
